WHAT IS GIRLGUIDING?

1. Girlguiding is a world wide voluntary organisation with 10 million members in 14 countries.

2. Girlguiding is about offering girls and young women opportunities to try new things in a fun and safe environment.

3. Girlguiding is about developing girls to their full potential making new friends and fun.

4. The Girlguiding method is based on 5 principles, known as the...

5. ...5 ESSENTIALS. These put the girl at the centre, focus on shared decision making, respect for the individual, commitment to the common standard, their promise and her participation in a balanced and varied programme.

Our members learn many skills that are transferrable to work and future life including teamwork, problem solving, project planning and leadership. Each Unit organises its own programme using the 5 Essentials and guidelines. The programmes include arts and crafts, team games, indoor and outdoor activities, music, drama, fundraising for charities and cooking. There are also activities with other groups at District, County and Ulster levels, trips, working towards gaining interest badges or challenge badges.

The older girls can take part in a range of activities from abseiling to party planning, from circus skills to survival, residential events, and international camps and an opportunity to take part in a gold event which is a community service project abroad for members aged 16 years and over. (Guiding Overseas Linked to Development).

All our leaders are PEC's checked and work within the Child Protection Policy of Girlguiding UK and that of First Presbyterian Church Ballynahinch. We are also registered as a youth group with the South Eastern Education & Library Board, Youth Division, enabling us to take part in any training offered by these three bodies. No previous guiding experience is required and we are always looking for leaders, 18 years +; useful on a CV.

For further information contact any of the leaders or telephone Girlguiding Ulster HQ office - 028 9042 5212 - or view their web site www.girlguidingulster.org.uk or www.girlguiding.org.uk
