Update!
The Tearfund Orientation has just passed and the team has now met each other, and we're a little more informed about the adventure ahead! We'll be working with the Church of Uganda at the Diocese of Kigezi Water and Sanitation Programme, building water storage tanks and laying pipe work which will provide a village in the region with a clean, fresh water supply.
It's very exciting work to be involved in - few teams offer the chance to make such a huge and lasting impact on a community. It is a six week project running from the 25th July until the 7th September.
We'll be living in the village where we work, in a house built by the local people for us, and using their markets and produce to do our own cooking on the utensils which they provide. Since we're there to do the construction allowing a water supply, we'll also be gathering our water from the source they currently use.
I'll have to learn how to carry a water can on my head like a real African! Being so much a part of the community for the 6 weeks we are there, we will be living as they really do, truly experiencing African life. There will be no water, no electricity, no toilet - well, not as we know it!
We'll be able to take part in church life, schools work and impromptu children's clubs and games afternoons. It really is a project which will stretch our capabilities further than we knew we could!
I've just returned from a weekend of Orientation in Gloucester where I met my team. The accommodation and nature of the work has limited the size of the team to 8, currently 5 guys and 3 girls.
6 of us are currently based in Scotland. We have one professional water engineer and 3 engineering students, a medical student, a sports physiology student, a student of international relations and politics, and a biology and philosophy student. I think we cover all eventualities with that mix!
Prayer points:
- Continued team building and strengthening of friendships over next months before we leave
- Confidence and courage in our ability to complete the project
- Practical details of our trip - medical clearances, fundraising, accommodation for our stay
- Continued preparation of the hearts and minds of the people we'll meet
