Uganda! ALSO IN THIS SECTION
I'm hitting the road again!

Yes, I am an 'Africa-Junkie'. On 26 July I begin another six-week adventure leading a team of 14 people from all over UK, as part of the Tearfund Transform Programme 2005.

Uganda is a country in East Africa, famous as the most expensive country and famous for its on-going conflict.

We will be working in a small village in south west Uganda called Kigezi. The Kigezi Water Sanitation Programme, our host for the visit and Tearfund partner, aims to provide clean water and sanitation for all the people who live in the district of Kigezi.

Our aim is to complete the construction of three water storage tanks in Kigezi village which will allow all the villagers to have access to clean water within 100 yards of their homes.

The team will be living in two houses in the centre of the village, in the midst of the curious local community. Although the local women will provide our groceries, we will be expected to transform the 'groceries' into meals!

This may sound simple enough until I explain that we have to prepare it all - how exactly does a live chicken in a cage on the doorstep become a chicken drumstick or a chicken fillet??!

Before we leave in July there is much preparation to do. It all begins in a few weeks time when we meet for our orientation weekend in Gloucester on 22 - 24 April. An exciting weekend of meeting the people who will become a close-knit unit for six weeks of a great adventure! We will also find out a little more about what we will be doing and where we'll be staying and how we'll be living.

There's also the medical clearance and vaccination programme that each person requires and the fundraising that team members undertake.

I have chosen not to undertake any formal fundraising events this summer!

June 4th is the training day for leaders and will be held in London. This is a crash course on all things administrative, pastoral and cultural. How to best care for a team so that every personality is catered for and each person has the best experience we can give them. Oh, and what to do if someone gets sick or kidnapped or lost……! Unlikely scenarios, I'm assured!!

As I get more information I'll provide you with it.

Points for Prayer:
  • Prepare the team with everything we need for this outreach mission, to be as effective as we can and to be as productive as we can during the six weeks we will be in Uganda.
  • That God will prepare the road ahead - the hearts of the team, the people we meet and those we work alongside.
  • Good team relationships - members of the team are from all over United Kingdom and are aged between 18 and 54; there are students, school-leavers, businessmen - a wealth of life experience to be used to our advantage.
